What VIN verification is
A VIN verification is a physical inspection confirming that a vehicle Vehicle Identification Number matches its paperwork. A licensed verifier examines the VIN plate and any secondary VIN locations, records the odometer and federal emissions label, and completes the DMV Verification of Vehicle (REG 31) form.
It is not a smog check and it is not a safety inspection. It exists to confirm the vehicle in front of the inspector is genuinely the vehicle on the title.

When it is required
- Registering a vehicle brought in from another state, the most common reason by a wide margin
- Assembled, specially constructed, or kit vehicles
- Vehicles with a missing, altered, damaged, or replaced VIN plate
- Certain salvage and revived-salvage registrations
- Some out-of-state trailers, motorcycles, and off-highway vehicles
- When the DMV specifically instructs you to obtain one
How the appointment works
Tell us where the vehicle is
It does not need to be driveable or registered. It does need to be accessible. We have to physically reach the VIN locations.
We inspect on site
Typically 15 to 20 minutes. We check the dashboard VIN, door jamb, and any secondary locations, plus the odometer and emissions label.
You get your completed REG 31
Signed and dated, ready to submit with the rest of your registration paperwork.
You file with the DMV
The verification is one piece of your registration packet. We complete the inspection; the registration itself is between you and the DMV.

Because mileage is calculated to your vehicle exact location, VIN verification is not bookable through the online intake form. We will give you the total before you confirm.
